Finding work in the skilled trades can feel daunting when arriving to Canada for the first time. Luckily, Build ON is here today to share with you an amazing post-arrival program that is hosted through three YMCA locations in Ontario– Power of Trades. In this blog, Build ON was able to speak with Elina Sharkova, an Employer Liaison with YMCA Ottawa Power of Trades Program. After working with the YMCA for over 14 years, she has been able to gather a plethora of information related to the skilled trades- and she has taken the time to share not only information about Power of Trades with us, but she also has shared some insider tips and tricks for finding employment in the skilled trades!
When it first started in 2011, Power of Trades focused on providing orientation, information sessions, and support to newcomers who were interested in entering skilled trades. The program helped newcomers understand the requirements for skilled trades jobs in Ontario, improve language skills, and learn about the labor market. Currently the program is running in three YMCA’s in Ontario:
YMCA of the National Capital Region,
YMCA of Greater Toronto,
YMCA of Three Rivers. To sign up for the program, please click the
“Apply Now” link listed on their webpage. Kindly note that a session for French speakers will begin in January 2025 at the YMCA NCR in Ottawa. If you are interested, please make sure to attend an information session.
Elina has shared with Build ON about the many benefits that arise from joining the Power of Trades program.
“
The program provides training and guidance on how to enter and succeed in the Canadian job market, including job search techniques, resume writing, and interview skills. Participants obtain workplace certifications such as WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and health and safety training, making them more competitive in the job market. The program connects participants with industry professionals, employers, and trade unions, helping to build essential networks for job placement and career growth. The program helps newcomers understand the Canadian work culture, workplace communication, and employer expectations, easing their transition into the workforce. Participants receive one-on-one career counseling, mentorship, and support throughout their training and job search. In some cases, the program offers financial support to help cover costs related to tools, safety equipment, or transportation.”
Throughout her years working with the Power of Trades program in Ottawa, Elina has been able to support so many newcomers in finding employment here in Ontario in the skilled trades. The Power of Trades program has seen many success stories, and Elina wanted to share one success story with us. A prior Power of Trades client from Ukraine has said:
“I was brought in by a job search and a training program. I got a lot of knowledge and skills from the program and the team Power of Trades program, and I got a job: Facility Technician in Marriott/Westin/Delta hotels in Ottawa. The Y staff from the Power of Trades program provided me with knowledge on employment and job search in Canada and gave me the opportunity to get the certifications I needed to get a job.”
Elina has also taken some time to share resources, as well as insider tips, on how to be successful in the trades here in Canada –
“
Research the trades in demand: the demand for tradespeople can vary by region, so check labor market trends to find out which sectors offer the best opportunities. Investigate the local job market where you plan to settle, as certain trades may be more in demand in rural or urban areas. Understand trades requirements: depending on your trade, you may need a certification or license to practice. For example, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians – the most popular trades - must be licensed in Ontario. Be sure to research the specific requirements for your trade or reach out to your employment consultant for more information. Stay Physically Fit: many trades require physical strength and stamina. Staying in shape can improve your performance on the job and reduce the risk of injury.”
Power of Trades is a mix between in class learning, job site visits, training and certification sessions, and interview and resume preparation. Build ON has been able to volunteer to support the Ottawa Power of Trades team in their informative and interactive “Interview Twister” event. Clients get a chance to meet with YMCA staff, and engage in mock interview sessions. To close off the event, Elina leads a round table chat with the group, and valuable tips and tricks are shared. Build ON can attest to the fact that clients leave Interview Twister feeling prepared to succeed in a Canadian Interview for the skilled trades.
Build ON has been lucky enough to be able to work alongside the Ottawa Power of Trades Team, and has first hand seen how dedicated not only Elina is to helping clients succeed, but also all of the Power of Trades Teams across Ontario. No matter which of the three locations you enroll in, you can be sure that Power of Trades will be there to support you on your employment journey in the skilled trades.
