Meet Sid
Sid registered to Build ON because he felt that the Skilled Trades would be a great fit for him, considering his background as a civil engineer back in India. He was hoping to find an alternative career in the skilled trades sector in Ontario. Alternative careers apply your transferable skills and experience in employment opportunities that are different from your original occupation. Sid registered to Build ON before he arrived in Canada. With the help of his Employment Consultant, he narrowed down the different Skilled Trades he was interested in and developed a career action plan. He was also provided with labour market information about his skilled trade of choice and relevant resources. When Sid came to Ottawa, he was referred to the Power of Trades program at the YMCA-YWCA National Capital Region. Power of Trades is a pre-employment program that supports participants in their goal of working in the Skilled Trades. During the program, he received employment support from an Employment Consultant at the Y Employment Access Centre and the job developers at the Power of Trades program. Before graduating from the Power of Trades program, Sid successfully obtained a job in the Skilled Trades sector as a sheet metal worker.
